Belief, Thought, Feeling, Action: Choosing Mental Health & Being With What Is | with Josh Trent
Josh Trent has spent the past 17 years as a researcher, trainer, and facilitator discovering the physical and emotional intelligence for humans to thrive in our modern world, founding Wellness Force Media and creating Wellness Force Radio in the process. In 2019, Josh also became the CEO of Civilized Caveman, helping women and men live better through practical tools for wellness, personal development, and paleo-friendly recipes.
The Wellness Force movement in 2020 is to help end the mental health crisis and be a part of humanity coming together to heal both mental and physical health through breathwork, organic superfoods, and wellness intelligence — and that is a mission we definitely want to be a part of here at Gravity.
There is genuine kindness and compassion that just flows out of Josh with every word and every movement of his body, and we think you’ll really hear that in this episode. He’s gone through a lot in his life — like every one of us — but he’s also done the work to acknowledge his trauma and make it work for him, which is a step that we can all benefit from but not a lot of us are willing to or know how to take.
Luckily, Josh has a knack for breaking this stuff down and making the choice to change feel accessible. It isn’t easy. It will require you to live more intentionally and consciously every day, for the rest of your life. But the rewards are incomparable.
What Brett asks:
- [2:30] What’s your origin story?
- [6:25] What did you learn from past-life regression and how did you go about doing it?
- [16:00] How did your father’s generational trauma show up in your childhood? Your mother’s?
- [24:00] How did your generational trauma start manifesting as a teenager?
- [29:40] What pulled you into observer mode so that you could see the unconscious way you were living?
- [37:25] How did you move into the work you’re doing now?
- [45:00] What is Rythmia and how did it affect you?
- [52:20] How are you using all of the experiences that led up to now, good and bad?
- [1:02:40] Tell us about BTFA (Belief, Thought, Feeling, Action).
Lessons for intentional living:
- When Josh spoke with Mother Ayahuasca during his plant medicine ceremony, she told him that his work “is to be grateful for what you have.” But even if the universe hasn’t sent you this message, you can still learn from it. That doesn’t mean you can’t strive for a deeper connection, want more, or work towards that goal. But you have to meet life and the people around you where they are.
- The #1 thing you can do for mental health is just to learn how to be with what is. You can go to Byron Katie workshops and you can download all kinds of guides. But unless you are actually doing it, unless you are sitting in stillness at some point during the morning, it can be really challenging to have mental health. Your brain’s default is to be alert and search for threats, but you can choose not to operate from that mode.
- BTFA stands for belief, thought, feeling, action. You have a belief, it creates a thought, then you feel a certain way. Then to either deal with that feeling or not deal with that feeling, you’re going to take an action. So, all of our actions are a product of that BTFA loop. “We’re a product of our beliefs and thoughts, and if we’re not careful, our feelings lead us to actions that are either aligned with our heart or not.”
